The Gap

The difference between making music that makes people feel stuff and just messing around.

You’ve got an eight-bar idea that slaps. The loop is clean. The sound is dialed. You keep hitting play.

But the song never comes.

How do you turn an eight-bar idea into a full song? How do you write a chord progression that actually moves someone? How do you build tension and release, the kind that keeps people coming back? How do you know when a track is done? How do you take a simple idea and turn it into a world your listeners can get lost in forever?

How does one note end up with the power of a whole orchestra?

These are the questions keeping you up at night. The melody in your head won’t land. Your songs aren’t hitting the mark. You’re starting to wonder if there’s something wrong with you.

There isn’t. You just haven’t learned this part yet.

The 90-Day Recipe

Mastering Composition and Arrangement

Composition and arrangement, translating your artistic vision into reality. Knowing the history of how people have put music together so you can take it further than they ever did. That’s what this course is about.

I’ve never done a full 90-day 12-level course on this crucial topic until now. Truth is, this one is kind of my specialty.

You’ll finally learn how to make tracks that are addicting to listen to. I’ll teach you practical music theory pulled from every era that mattered. Monophonic roots, baroque, Afro-Cuban polymeters, minimalism, postmodern sampling. Not dry theory. Practical moves.

ill.Gates in the studio

20 years · 60+M streams · 275 tracks · 1,000+ shows

My name is ill.Gates and I’m like the opposite of a Gatekeeper. Unlocking and sharing musical secrets is what I do.

I’ve racked up 58 million plays on over 300 songs, including collaborations with the winners of 10 Grammys, and made music for Star Wars and GTA5. My past students and collaborators include Apashe, G Jones, Illenium, Mr. Bill, Beats Antique, Eprom, Pretty Lights, Daily Bread, and Dr Fresch. Grammy nominee Damian Taylor (producer of Bjork, The Prodigy, The Killers, and Arcade Fire) even used my Moog sub multisamples on all his Grammy-nominated albums.

I’ve been DJing since I was 13. Performing is what I do. What I’ve always done. What I will never stop doing. Music runs through my veins. It’s what fuels me. 1,000+ shows on 5 continents, still slayin’ it on the daily.

I also teach. Built the world’s first Ableton DJ Templates in 2006. Invented ‘Mudpies’ in 2008. Built ‘128s’ in 2010. Founded Producer Dojo in 2016 with one mission: launch 1,000 music careers. 300+ consecutive weeks of live classes since. No breaks. No vacations. Guest lectures at Berklee College of Music, NYU, the Ableton Education Summit, and Ableton’s ‘One Thing’. Over 1,000 producers trained. My 128s-style wavetables ship with Serum 2, the world’s most popular synth.

I spent 20 years designing the Dojo to be the most engaging, most effective, and most efficient home base for producers. The place I wish I’d had coming up.

Mastering Composition & Arrangement is how you find your style. The rules, the structures, the patterns that make people listen.

I've worked with the best of the best, and I saw where the rest went astray. I studied both failure and success, tested method after method, and designed this course in collaboration with real musicians just like you.

Now it's your turn.

Who This Is For

Your Loops Are Fire. Your Songs Should Be Too.

This IS for you if:

  • You know you were born to make music
  • You want to close the gap between your taste and your skills
  • You can make a great loop and dial in great sounds but your songs don’t flow or finish
  • You love exploring the history, theory, and philosophy of music
  • You want practical music theory you can actually use
  • You want written feedback from ill.Gates himself in the course Discord
  • You want to get your hands dirty with these different concepts and have fun
  • You’re ready to say profound and epic things with your art

This is NOT for you if:

  • You’ve never opened a DAW. Start with The Producer’s Path instead.
  • You want the heaviest workload 90-day album-making bootcamp. That’s The Crucible.
  • You want a passive watch-in-the-background course
  • You want to be handed a plugin or preset instead of learning composition

This one’s about exploration. Getting your hands dirty. Having fun with concepts guaranteed to make you a better artist for the rest of your life. It’s philosophical. It teaches you a new way to appreciate art, the human experience in music, and your place in the world, so you can make work that’s authentic and timeless.

This is the one where your unique lived experience and personal style become a superpower. Before the course is over you will know exactly how to build a world your fans can get lost in.

FAQ

Questions Before You Enroll

What if I already know some music theory?
Good. MCA isn’t dry theory. That’s what ill.Gates specifically doesn’t teach. It’s practical music theory applied to electronic production. You’ll use what you know as a foundation and build in directions most theory classes never touch: polymeters, sampling, minimalism, postmodern composition.
How much time per week?
MCA is an intermediate course, so it’s more exploratory than productivity-driven. Plan 3–5 hours a week: the class + the music-making challenge + your own playing time. It’s less hours than The Crucible and more than TPP.
Do I need to have taken The Producer’s Path first?
No, but The Producer’s Path is where ill.Gates recommends most people start if they’re new to making music. If you can already make a loop and dial in a sound but your songs don’t flow, you’re ready for Mastering Composition and Arrangement directly.
What DAW do I need?
Ableton is the primary DAW in the workshops. The compositional principles translate to Logic, FL Studio, Cubase, Bitwig, and any modern DAW. The focus is on composition and arrangement you can use anywhere.
How does the Discord feedback work?
You’ll get direct written feedback from ill.Gates in the course Discord. Ask him anything. He moderates and answers personally.
Do I get 1-on-1 access to ill.Gates?
You get written feedback on your actual mixes from ill.Gates in the course Discord every week. It’s not a private 1-on-1 package. ill.Gates is in the Discord. ill.Gates moderates. ill.Gates answers every week. You do get an option to purchase Sensei sessions at the end of your checkout.
What’s the refund policy?
30 days. If Mastering Composition and Arrangement isn’t everything ill.Gates promised, email support for a full refund. No questions, no hard feelings.
When do classes start?
Live classes run weekly on their own day of the week. On-demand recordings are available so you can go at your own pace. First cohort date coming soon. Enroll now and we’ll notify you the moment the start date is set.
Can I upgrade to the annual Dojo membership later?
Yes. Many students come back and join the Dojo for a year so they get all of the courses instead of just one. Email support and we’ll credit your MCA purchase toward an annual.

Decision Time

YOU’VE READ THIS FAR FOR A REASON.

You’ll never have to worry about whether what you’re doing is legit. You’ll never have to worry about what people think of your music. You’ll know it’s sick and so will everybody else.

You’ll never have to worry about getting stuck, getting lost, wondering if there’s something wrong with you because you can’t finish the project you’re working on. Wondering why your songs aren’t hitting the mark. Why that melody isn’t landing with your audience.

You’ll know. You’ll know. And you’ll be able to go forth with confidence and make the music you’ve always wanted to make.

Two paths. One choice.

Path A · Nothing Changes

Keep making loops.

Another year of eight-bar ideas that never become songs. Another year of wondering why that melody isn’t landing. Another year of listening to your heroes and wondering why your work doesn’t hit the same. The questions keep keeping you up at night.

Path B · MCA

Find your voice.

90 days from today, you have a compositional language of your own. You know the history of how people put music together so you can take it further. You finish tracks that go somewhere. You’ll know.

The next cohort starts May 2026.
Classes start May 11th.

Miss it and you’re waiting until the next round. There are no extensions and no exceptions. When the cohort starts, the door closes.

Start Today →

P.S. Composition, mixing, and sound design are the three pillars of music that feels intentional. Miss one and you’re missing a massive chunk of what makes great songs great. Every producer needs all three to make music that’s irresistible and lasts for generations. Are you ready?

GREAT. THEN I’LL SEE YOU IN THE DOJO.
